EUcoalsizer
On-line and in-line measurement of particle size and velocity distribution in coal pipes
Challenge
The coal particle size spectrum has a strong impact on the combustion inside the boiler. It influences ignition delay, combustion efficiency and LoI, the emission levels as well as slagging and fouling. Despite this significant role that this property plays, there has not yet been a robust and reliable in-line and on-line coal particle size distribution measuring system. To date, the method of choice is to collect samples from the coal pipe and then measure the particle size distribution by sieving. The results are only available after a long time, making direct correlations to operational mill settings virtually impossible.
Solution
EUcoalsizer solves this problem. The system measures the particle size distribution, density, velocity and temperature inside a measurement volume that is placed at the tip of an insertable lance. By traversing the lance through the pipe, a spatially resolved distribution along the cross-section of the coal pipe can be measured. In contrast to laser diffraction methods, the time-of-transition method covers very large particles up to 4 mm. Particle sizes down to 20 µm can be identified. The velocity measurement proves to be an essential add-on as it allows determination of coal mass flow in the pipe.
Specification
The system comes turn-key and can be directly applied via an adapter to the coal pipe. The system works continuously and delivers results on-line. It can be easily integrated into an existing monitoring & control environment. Handling is very easy via an intuitive graphical user interface.
